I'm Josh, also known as Jodhus. Adequate husband, passable father, functional systems administrator.
Things that make me happy:
- I'm into #retrocomputing. I'm quite nostalgic for the #c64 and #amiga computers I owned as a child.
- My father introduced me to #linux and #openbsd in the late 90's and I've used them both ever since. He was also instrumental in encouraging the concepts of #security and #privacy to me at an early age.
- My way of giving back to my friends/family/community is by #selfhosting and offering various services to them, including services that promote #federation.
- I like to tinker with #python and #rust programming, leading to questionable results.
- I find humor in almost anything and tend to not be offended by much; however, I will explode into fits of giggles for #nonsequitur and #snarky humor. I am a big fan of #mst3k and #rifftrax.
- I love most genres of music, but I'm not a fan of pop and modern country.
- I used to have lots of fun with #nightphotography back when my camera was state-of-the-art, but have not had the chance in nearly two decades.
- The way to my heart is through #thaifood, #sushi, and most other Asian cuisine.

This is what I was subjected to as a kid and my brain decides now, 30 years later, to bring back the suppressed memory:
New collection of archive tracks by Brothomstates - https://brothomstates.bandcamp.com/album/rekobn-tich-ey - these are from 1997/1998 or thereabouts. Glad these get to be heard.
Try not to bop your head. I dare you.

Is there a place I can buy computer peripherals that aren't laced with LEDs? I don't need my machine lighting up my office like the Singularity. . .
This remix will never grow old on me. One of the most beautiful things I've ever heard:
Most of Infocom's early Macintosh ports displayed a full-screen "Infocom" logo as you booted the floppy disk, but "Zork I" had this amazing custom startup screen instead.

back in the late 90s, when #uo's playerbase was exploding, player-built houses were both a convenient secure location, and a social signal of personal wealth. when a new shard (server) opened, players would race around the map trying to find legal "placements" for house deeds... areas where you could erect a home that had flat land, and no rocks or trees in the way. open land was truly scarce, and competitions to place a house were fierce.
to combat the real estate rush, #OriginSystems implemented a "decay" mechanic that would make your house collapse/disappear if it was unoccupied for a few weeks. thousands of homes disappeared this way, to the extreme frustration of the player community.
in the late 90s, a player placed this tiny single room house on the Napa Valley shard, between the towns of Minoc and Vesper. it remained occupied for years, until it was converted into a "public house" without locks. the house still stands to this day, 24 years later. it is one of the longest standing player-built homes in the history of the #mmorpg.

I’ve been using vi as an editor ever since my father was using it on his Amiga 2000 running Workbench 2.1. However, I’ve recently been looking into maybe giving emacs a try. I’m sure this will be an interesting mind unfscking. . .

A story on giving credit:
Back in the 00s, I attended a network analysis tutorial taught by @taosecurity.
He had been called into an intrusion response. The client gave him the firewall logs. They had logged all blocked packets, but no passed traffic. He looked at them for a moment and pushed them away. They were useless. "They told me what *didn't* happen, not what happened."
I had had the exact same experience, but his phrasing was perfect.
Later, I was writing an article on flow-tools for (IIRC) O'Reilly. I could have just used that phrase. Who cares, it's just words, right? Instead, I told the truth and said I'd heard it in a tutorial.
RB read the article and said "Hey, that was me." He became one of my most vocal supporters, and still encourages folks to buy my books to this day.
All because I gave him credit.
Turns out, it was a broadly used cliche that I had never heard before. If I had simply used his phrase, he wouldn't have even noticed.
Credit is among the most valuable social currencies, and costs you nothing. NOTHING. Spend it liberally.
I remember borrowing this album back when listening to secular music in my family/school was considered taboo and being shocked to hear Adam cuss in a few songs. My father took me on a trip to visit my aunt in Michigan and I listened to this album non-stop on the way there and back. It was the beginning of the end for my limited collection of contemporary Christian garbage. . .
